WCI has been selected by the ESOP Association as the winner of the 2012 “Total Communications” Annual Award for Communications Excellence (AACE). The AACE Awards are sponsored each year by the association to recognize the outstanding communication and educational programs to its members. The awards are presented each May at the Association’s Annual Conference in Washington, DC to companies who have excelled in communicating the ESOP and its meaning to company employees.


Congratulations EOCC and WCI!!!! This is a huge National honor and we should be proud of what we accomplished last year.

At the Annual Meeting, held May 18, 2012, the Woodward Communications, Inc. Shareholders elected Jim Etheredge to the Woodward Communications, Inc. Board of Directors. Jim joins the board as outside, independent director.


Jim is currently the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Crescent Electric Supply Company. Jim began his career with Crescent Electric Supply Company in February of 1985 and has served in various corporate capacities.


Jim graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa with a B.A. in accounting. He received a Certificate of Merit from the Small Business Institute in recognition of management counseling services provided to the business community while at UNI. Upon graduation Jim took the C.P.A. examination and obtained a Certified Public Accountant’s Certificate. His professional career began with McGladrey and Pullen.


He currently serves on the Board of Directors and loan committee for Dubuque Bank & Trust and on the Board of Directors and finance committee for Crescent Community Health Center.

Greg Bell, Senior Vice President - Woodward Radio Group, a division of Woodward Communications, Inc., is pleased to announce that William Wells will take on the role of General Manager on August 1, 2012, for Woodward Communications, Inc. newly acquired Waterloo/Cedar Falls Radio Stations.


Bill joins Woodward Communications, Inc. with a breadth of radio experience. He started his career with Stoner Broadcasting and spent 10 out of his 15 years with that group in the Des Moines, Iowa markets. He spent the next several years in the Louisville, Kentucky markets working for Regent Communications, Henson Media, and Clear Channel Communications.


Bill was able to move back to his Iowa roots when he joined Saga Communications as the director of sales in Des Moines in 1997. Shortly after joining Saga Communications Bill was promoted to General Manager and held that role until 2009 when he left to join Three Eagles Communications in Fort Dodge, Iowa and most recently has been working for Clear Channel Communications in Des Moines.


Bill was an active member of the Iowa Broadcasters Association. He served on their Board of Directors between 1998 and 2008 and during his tenure on the Board he also served as President of the organization.


Bill is a lifelong learner and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration, University of Iowa, MBA Credits at Drake University, and attended the National Association of Broadcaster’s Executive Management Program, University of Notre Dame.

He has a long broadcast history and has the experience, integrity, and knowledge to help us grow the stations, integrate quickly into the Waterloo/Cedar Falls business community, and embrace a friendly employee owner environment.”

Steve Larson, Corporate Treasurer and CFO of Woodward Communications, Inc., is pleased to announce that Steve Stoppelmoor took on the role of Corporate Controller on August 6, 2012, for Woodward Communications, Inc.


Steve brings over 15 years in executive accounting management to the organization. Prior to joining, WCI, he held leadership positions with Barnstead International, Eagle Window & Door and Alliant Energy. Steve received his BBA in Accounting from Iowa State University.


Steve Larson stated, “We are thrilled to have Steve join the Financial Services team. With his extensive financial management experience, he will be able to hit the ground running on many of the initiatives that we have planned for the next 12-18 months. He is committed to the Dubuque community and to our employee ownership culture.”

Bob Woodward III was unanimously elected VP-Strategic Planning and Business Development by the WCI Board of Directors on December 12, 2012. In this position, Bob will report to Tom Woodward, CEO and President, and be a member of COG. Bob will be joining the company in February 2013.


In this position, Bob will work in concert with the CEO/President, the Strategic Executive Committee (SEC), and COG members in the development of the overall strategic plan of the corporation. He also will be actively seeking out acquisition opportunities and supporting division managers with acquisitions that align with the strategic plan.

At the National ESOP Association’s December 4, 2011 Chapter Council Executive Committee meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, Dan Marcue, WCI Human Resources Director, was elected to Chair the ESOP Association Chapter Council effective January 1, 2012. The Council provides support, oversight, and representation to eighteen state and regional chapters of the ESOP Association. The Chair position entitles Marcue to membership on the Board of Directors for the National ESOP Association.


In response to Marcue’s election, Tom Yunt, President and CEO of WCI, made the following comment: “Dan’s involvement with the ESOP Association has not only benefited Dan in his personal career development, but has benefited WCI’s name and brand recognition within the ESOP community, and kept us abreast of ESOP best practices and legislative developments.”

The Woodward Communications, Inc. Shareholders met on December 12 and unanimously elected Mike Gile to the Board of Directors. As a director, Mike will be the Chair of the Compensation, Governance and Board Development Committee, and will serve on the Audit Committee as well as the ESOP Plan Committee.


Mike Gile rejoins WCI as a member of the Board. In his 38+ years of employment with the company, Mike served in many roles, on many committees and participated in numerous task forces.

Mary Ungs-Sogaard, Publisher of the Dyersville Commercial and Cascade Pioneer, and General Manager of the Eastern Iowa Shopping News, was named Master Editor-Publisher by the Iowa Newspaper Association at its annual convention in Des Moines on Friday, February 3. The Master Editor-Publisher Award is the association’s most prestigious award.


Mary came to WCI in November, 2001, as the Classified Manager of the Telegraph Herald. In the fall of 2002, Mary was named Publisher of the Dyersville Commercial and Cascade Pioneer, and Eastern Iowa Shopping News’ General Manager. During her time as Publisher, Mary has overseen the redesign of the two newspapers, as well as the launch of their corresponding web sites.


Mary is a graduate of the University of Iowa’s Journalism and English programs, and has over thirty years of experience in working with management, publishing and newspapers. Mary is active with the Dyersville Area Community Foundation, serving the past two years as Chairperson, and is a member of various area organizations. In 2010, Mary was elected President of the Iowa Newspaper Association’s Board of Directors, and served as Past President in 2011.


Mary first worked with INA in 1982 as Advertising Manager of the Dyersville Commercial, when newly-hired INA Director, Bill Monroe, visited her at the paper. She continued her involvement with the association when she returned to the Dyersville and Cascade locations in 2002 under Woodward Communications, Inc. and was then asked to join the board. Since then, she has served on the INA Services Company, and in each of the officer positions on the INA Board, as well as on various committees, including Strategic Planning for the future of INA and C.N.A.


Other WCI employee owners who have been awarded Master Editor-Publisher include Tom Yunt, WCI President and CEO (2002), and Brian Cooper, Telegraph Herald Executive Editor (2009).

The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association on January 25 elected WCI’s Kelly Radandt, national sales manager for Woodward Radio Group and local sales manager for WAPL-WZOR-WXMM in Appleton-Green Bay, as the WBA Vice Chair (Radio).


Kelly, who joined the WBA Board in 2008, has served as Secretary of the Executive Committee (2010) and Treasurer (2011). Kelly will become Chair-Elect in 2013, Chair of the WBA Board in 2014, and Immediate Past Chair in 2015.


She will become only the third woman to serve as Chair of the WBA Board. (The first was Susan Knaack, then WCI Vice President-Broadcast.)


In addition, Kelly has been appointed to the WBA Foundation Board.


Kelly joined WCI in May 1989 as a WAPL account executive. She was promoted to WAPL local sales manager in 1996 and is currently the national sales manager for Woodward Radio Group and local sales manager for WAPL-WZOR-WXMM. She is Past-Chair of the WCI Employee Owner Communications Committee (EOCC) and has played an active and instrumental role in the current company-wide Rev-It-Up initiative.
