One of the highlights of the June 16, 2011 Corporate Operating Group meeting in Richland Center, Wisconsin was the announcement that Karen Ruden was named a member of the Corporate Operating Group (COG), WCI’s senior management group effective July 1, 2011.

 

In making the announcement, WCI President & CEO Tom Yunt, made the following comments: “Karen has served exceptionally well as an interim COG member since she began reporting to me directly in January 2010 and has now earned the opportunity and right to officially join COG and serve as a member of our valued senior management team. Karen brings a vast amount of niche publishing experience and a fresh perspective to the COG group. I’m very excited for Karen, COG and WCI and proud and grateful for her continued contributions to our dynamic employee owned media company.”

 

Karen, currently Group Publisher, WoodwardBizMedia joined WCI in September 2002 as Associate Publisher, Magellan Medical Division. Subsequently, Karen was named Associate Publisher and Sales Manager, Magellan Publishing in August 2003 and Group Publisher, Specialty Publications in March 2005. With the advent of the division’s name change to WoodwardBizMedia in 2008, Karen assumed her current title of Group Publisher, WoodwardBizMedia. WoodwardBizMedia publishes several national B-to-B magazines in the material handling, electric power generation and renewable power and fuels markets.

 

In 2005, the WCI Board of Directors named Karen to the WCI Profit Sharing/401(k) Trustees. In 2010, Karen was appointed as a member of the Telegraph Herald Editorial Board.

 

Karen started her publishing career in 1982 at the Antique Trader Publications. While there, she had several positions in a variety of departments including circulation, advertising, production and accounts receivables. Her leadership positions included Customer Service Manager, Advertising Manager and Sales and Advertising Director, the position she held prior to joining WCI in 2002.

Steve Fisher, Group Publisher of Woodward Community Media, announced that Lee Borkowski, General Manager of Unified Newspaper Group, will take on the additional responsibilities of General Manager of the Richland Center and Wisconsin-Iowa Shopping News. Lee will replace Deb Mullarkey, who is leaving the company June 30 to be with family in Arizona. The change is effective July 1. Lee will continue to report to Steve Fisher.

 

“Lee has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the free paper industry. Her experience in overseeing multiple publications in her past makes her a natural fit for this position,” Fisher said. “We are blessed with many experienced employee owners in Richland Center and Prairie du Chien. I’m confident that Lee will work well with both operations.

 

Lee joined Woodward Communications, Inc. in October 2009, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Verona Press, Stoughton Courier Hub, Oregon Observer, and Great Dane Shopping News publications.

 

Lee has more than 30 years of experience in community newspaper publishing. She joined her family-owned shopping guide, Trade Lines, in 1977, learning the business from the ground up. There she served in several positions, from graphics specialist to general manager to Publisher. In 2000 she joined Journal Community Publishing Group and served as its regional manager, with direct oversight of the Stevens Point and Wausau Buyers Guides.

 

Lee’s accolades include the Association of Free Community Papers’ (AFCP) Publisher of the Year and Distinguished Service Awards. She served as that organization’s president, and is a past board member. She is also a past board member and president of the Community Papers of Michigan, and is currently a member of Wisconsin Community Papers.

 

Tina Knable will serve as interim Sales and Marketing Manager at Unified Newspaper Group, assuming managerialresponsibilities for Advertising and Circulation as we go through a formalized search for a Sales and Marketing Manager at UNG.

Becky Wiegel, a WCI Corporate Division employee owner has been given additional management responsibilities in the Human Resources Department. In her new role, Becky will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the HR administrative employee owners, Amy Wagner, Judy Timmerman, Mark Koehler, and Emily Mashak. Pat Tobin will continue to report to Dan Marcue. Becky will also continue responsibilities for benefits and compensation functions and take on other high level managerial functions, while reporting to Dan Marcue.

 

“Becky has excelled in her role as the Benefits/Compensation Manager since joining WCI two and a half years ago. This promotion will allow her to take on a supervisory role and become even more valuable to the company. Becky has been a great addition to the Human Resources Department and I look forward to coaching her in her new role,” stated Dan Marcue, Human Resources Director.

 

Prior to joining WCI she worked as the Employment/Benefits Specialist for Capital Newspapers in Madison, WI and had over 9 years of human resources experience. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resources from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse and maintains a Professional Human Resources certification from the Society of Human Resources Management.

For the second time in 4 years, WAPL was awarded the top prize in radio by being named Rock Station of the Year by it’s peers at the National Association of Broadcasters’ annual convention September 15, 2011 in Chicago. Facing competition from big markets like Los Angeles and Austin, TX, WAPL took the award back to one of the smallest markets in the country by creating a big market sound through innovative programming and listener promotions that are second to none.

 

In accepting the award, WAPL Program Director, Joe Calgaro pointed out to the auditorium audience that “…it looks like Green Bay wins again in Chicago!,” referring to the Packers victory in January’s NFL Championship game.

 

The MARCONI Awards from the National Association of Broadcasters and the Radio Advertising Bureau were established in 1989 and named after inventor and NOBEL PRIZE winner GUGLIELMO MARCONI, the NAB MARCONI RADIO AWARDS are given to radio stations and outstanding on-air personalities to recognize excellence in radio.

Dubuque, Iowa/Charlotte, NC - Friday, March 30, 2012 – Beverly B. Poston, President and CEO, of Bahakel Communications, Inc., and Tom Yunt, President and CEO of Woodward Communications, Inc. (WCI), jointly announced the sale of Bahakel’s four station radio cluster in Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Iowa to WCI. Jody McCoy of Media Services Group acted as the exclusive broker for the transaction representing the seller.

 

Effective April 1st the addition of the Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Iowa 4-station group increases WCI’s broadcast holdings to 11 stations in the region with their other radio station cluster in the Green Bay, Appleton/Oshkosh, Wisconsin markets. Woodward Communications, Inc., headquartered in Dubuque, Iowa, has six operating divisions: daily newspaper, weekly publications, commercial printing, niche B-2-B magazines, radio and a full-service advertising agency.

 

In announcing their purchase of the Waterloo/Cedar Falls group Yunt said, “We are very excited to add these outstanding stations to the Woodward Radio Group (WRG) and our “dynamic employee-owned media company,” and we look forward to the opportunity of serving the greater Waterloo/Cedar Falls communities. The stations are well positioned with their heritage and formats and have a wonderful track record in serving their valued listeners and advertisers.”

 

Poston said that “it is with highly mixed emotions that we sell the stations but that the decision was made easier because of the quality company that Woodward is, the fact that it is employee-owned and their commitment to provide such excellent services to the various communities in which they operate.”

 

She further added “that we (Bahakel) recently purchased an additional television station in Montgomery, AL, as well as an additional radio station for our Chattanooga cluster so this was done as some realignment of our properties. We leave Waterloo very reluctantly but comforted in knowing that our stations and employees will be in such wonderful hands.”

 

Bahakel also owns and operates six radio stations in Colorado Springs, CO and Chattanooga, TN and six television stations in Montgomery, AL (two stations); Jackson, TN; Columbia, SC, Myrtle Beach/Florence, SC, and their flagship station, WCCB-TV in Charlotte, NC.

WCI has been selected by the ESOP Association as the winner of the 2012 “Total Communications” Annual Award for Communications Excellence (AACE). The AACE Awards are sponsored each year by the association to recognize the outstanding communication and educational programs to its members. The awards are presented each May at the Association’s Annual Conference in Washington, DC to companies who have excelled in communicating the ESOP and its meaning to company employees.

 

Congratulations EOCC and WCI!!!! This is a huge National honor and we should be proud of what we accomplished last year.

At the Annual Meeting, held May 18, 2012, the Woodward Communications, Inc. Shareholders elected Jim Etheredge to the Woodward Communications, Inc. Board of Directors. Jim joins the board as outside, independent director.

 

Jim is currently the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Crescent Electric Supply Company. Jim began his career with Crescent Electric Supply Company in February of 1985 and has served in various corporate capacities.

 

Jim graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa with a B.A. in accounting. He received a Certificate of Merit from the Small Business Institute in recognition of management counseling services provided to the business community while at UNI. Upon graduation Jim took the C.P.A. examination and obtained a Certified Public Accountant’s Certificate. His professional career began with McGladrey and Pullen.

 

He currently serves on the Board of Directors and loan committee for Dubuque Bank & Trust and on the Board of Directors and finance committee for Crescent Community Health Center.

Greg Bell, Senior Vice President - Woodward Radio Group, a division of Woodward Communications, Inc., is pleased to announce that William Wells will take on the role of General Manager on August 1, 2012, for Woodward Communications, Inc. newly acquired Waterloo/Cedar Falls Radio Stations.

 

Bill joins Woodward Communications, Inc. with a breadth of radio experience. He started his career with Stoner Broadcasting and spent 10 out of his 15 years with that group in the Des Moines, Iowa markets. He spent the next several years in the Louisville, Kentucky markets working for Regent Communications, Henson Media, and Clear Channel Communications.

 

Bill was able to move back to his Iowa roots when he joined Saga Communications as the director of sales in Des Moines in 1997. Shortly after joining Saga Communications Bill was promoted to General Manager and held that role until 2009 when he left to join Three Eagles Communications in Fort Dodge, Iowa and most recently has been working for Clear Channel Communications in Des Moines.

 

Bill was an active member of the Iowa Broadcasters Association. He served on their Board of Directors between 1998 and 2008 and during his tenure on the Board he also served as President of the organization.

 

Bill is a lifelong learner and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration, University of Iowa, MBA Credits at Drake University, and attended the National Association of Broadcaster’s Executive Management Program, University of Notre Dame.

He has a long broadcast history and has the experience, integrity, and knowledge to help us grow the stations, integrate quickly into the Waterloo/Cedar Falls business community, and embrace a friendly employee owner environment.”

Steve Larson, Corporate Treasurer and CFO of Woodward Communications, Inc., is pleased to announce that Steve Stoppelmoor took on the role of Corporate Controller on August 6, 2012, for Woodward Communications, Inc.

 

Steve brings over 15 years in executive accounting management to the organization. Prior to joining, WCI, he held leadership positions with Barnstead International, Eagle Window & Door and Alliant Energy. Steve received his BBA in Accounting from Iowa State University.

 

Steve Larson stated, “We are thrilled to have Steve join the Financial Services team. With his extensive financial management experience, he will be able to hit the ground running on many of the initiatives that we have planned for the next 12-18 months. He is committed to the Dubuque community and to our employee ownership culture.”

Bob Woodward III was unanimously elected VP-Strategic Planning and Business Development by the WCI Board of Directors on December 12, 2012. In this position, Bob will report to Tom Woodward, CEO and President, and be a member of COG. Bob will be joining the company in February 2013.

 

In this position, Bob will work in concert with the CEO/President, the Strategic Executive Committee (SEC), and COG members in the development of the overall strategic plan of the corporation. He also will be actively seeking out acquisition opportunities and supporting division managers with acquisitions that align with the strategic plan.
